About
B.M English School:
B.M.
English School is Government Aided School situated at St. Johns Road, near
Commercial Street in Bangalore.
There
are only few government teachers (6) in schools and remaining are private
school teachers (30), nearly 400+ plus children are there.
Observations,
Interventions & Interpretations in School on 02-August-2017:
On
2nd August the School conducted drawing competition from 4th
to 10th class with different themes per class, in 4th
class I did my observation, their theme was “Village Life”. I also invigilated
the class with teacher’s instruction, after this drawing competition madam told
to me to select the best. When I tried to select some drawing which are
relevant and aesthetic. We didn’t say this selection(ing) process things to any
children in classroom.
In
classroom art work is there, students birthday list is there on chart and
painted around those photos are surrounded in apple drawing, in each class they
followed different shapes, in 2nd class the birthday photos are
surrounded by triangle shape with tape. And there are some more craft work is
there in classroom that is plant painting, India maps, etc. I attended class
till afternoon.
I
also felt little bad while judging the students art, there are some other good
drawings but that irrelevant to “Village life” theme. So teachers put that
drawings outside. Judging children art based aesthetics is good, but I am
thinking about other fellow mates feelings also, they might feel appreciative
and also jealous about others drawings. And I am very happy that, the school is
focusing on children’s art. I felt happy to participate in this activity in
school.
Here
I am attaching some photos of classroom.
(My
Co-classmate and Practicum mate Vikas Kumar’s photos, we both were in same
school; I don’t have any photos,)
Observations, Interventions &
reflections on 09-August-2017
Today
Prize distribution program held in school, the competition was held on last Wednesday,
giving prizes on this (9-Aug-2017) Wednesday. 4th to 10th
class all children along with their parents (The parents whose child selected
for prizes) assembled near the foyer assemble area. And Managing Director (MD),
is the chief guest for this program, School principal & other senior
teachers are also there on stage. School conducted some cultural activities
like singing songs, playing keyboard etc. and MD addressed the students about important
on arts in education and also encouraged the students to be part in art
(extracurricular) activities. In his speech he asked parents which you like
most among good painting or simple digital photograph. All said comparatively
we like paintings only, by this he explained about art importance. And also he
appreciated all the students and said that it’s very difficult to judge your
drawings
Later
he distributed prizes to 10 children whose painting are aesthetic and relevant
to the theme. Each class has different theme for their drawing which they
announced one week before the drawing competition. They selected 10 students
from each class for prize, 1st 2nd and 3rd and
other seven prizes are merit prizes.
I
was very happy when Managing Director (MD) is talking about important of arts
in education. When we make somethings from that we feel happy that artificial
things. Art is made by us, this helps in authentic learning which is main theme
in education. For that only school is helping the children a lot. I use
generally see that only 3 prizes will be given, but here they are 10 prizes. It
also kind of encourage to the children in school, He appreciated all the
students and said that It’s very difficult to judge your drawings, this show
his diplomacy while talking to children.
Observations, Interventions &
Interpretations in 23-August-2017:
Today 7th class students did an
activity (Drama) on Purandara dasa. The lesson from their textbook. The 7th
class students made skit on Purandara Dasa. They portrayed whole life
(Conception to Death) on stage by 200 students in collaboration with 6th
class students also. After this skit, quiz questions asked by other teacher,
and who answered correctly they got chocolate from school management. For this
skit all participants dressed different cultural clothes like saris, dhotis,
pajamas, khadi, etc. Students only made some dummy material like crown,
tambura, knife, etc. The skit was done with songs (Keerthana’s) of purandara
dasa by a music player, etc. The play done in seven parts for more than one
hour.
I just immerse in watching the skit, such
nice skit by theatre, drama, music, craft, etc. it is not possible to teach
every lesson like this, but we try this kind of activities per every semester,
this gives relief to them also gives some relaxation to children from abstract
knowledge. Luckily every Wednesday only they are conducting this type of
activities, it helped APU students particularly AEYE class students to get
exposure to arts in education and curriculum.
Interventions in Vimochana Nagar
community:
I
did my art activities in Vimochana Nagar community (Construction workers site)
near to our University, I am also member of Pahal club along with Vikas &
Sukesh from our class in university, there we (students) are conducting
tuitions for children on rotation basis, we celebrate some festivals there like
Independence day, Deepavali, etc. on behalf of Pahal club and AEYE practicum I
did my art interventions here also. We decorated with some pictures, paintings,
charts, etc. in classroom. In tuition rooms we do ice breaking activities with
children with help of others mates.
It
is very nice practical social interventions for us. I feel very happy to be
part of this kind of activities through pahal club with support of AEYE class.
Art
Mela
Practicum School for Art Mela:
Brookfield English School
Date of Art Mela happened:
25-October-2017
Facilitators for Art Mela:
Asha Madam, Sofia Madam, Kinnari Madam
Others volunteers for Art Mela:
Gagan Kumar, Kavitha, Avinash, Piyuli, etc.
About School:
Brook field school is a private school in
Bangalore, we did our Art Mela here itself with students and some teachers
Activities
for Art Mela (Pre planning activities) on 16th & 17th;
23rd & 24th October-2017
1) Madam
made us in forming different groups. We all formed into 3 different groups as
a) Craft
and art group: Indira, Bharghava Shyam, Vikas Kumar, Satish, Rencitha & Ranjeet.
b) Music
Group: Vishnu, Jetha, Farheen, Pratiksha, Vivek & Shakoor.
c) Drama
Group: Aditi, Digeshwar, Shika, Vishnu Pareek, Vrushab & Sukesh.
2) Selected
us for different for organising things for Art Mela.
3) All
AEYE students meeting in 7th floor. For buying gadgets, for making
charts, caps, certificates, transport etc.
4) Bought
the gadgets like Paints (Oil, Water, etc.), Brushes, salt, papers (plane &
color), pins, pencils and pen (Sketches, markers)
5) Pre
Visit to school for basic understanding
6) Made
nearly 300 caps for children.
7) Made
charts with activities name we are going to do in Art Mela.
8) Rehearsals
before Art Mela. Organised the things what we need to do in school (Decoration,
segregating the things)
9) Arranging
Transport to field place for practicum work
Interventions:
Pilot visit to school along with Indira
& Pratiksha, I participated in making caps for school children, Helped in
making charts for activities which are going to do school. I became the
rotation team member I need to help all members. We tried to do complete
rehearsals, but lack of time it was not completed.
Reflections:
Without our facilitator (Asha Madam), most
of the students participated in Art Mela preparation activities, I felt very
happy by seeing this and participating in this activities, in these two days we
made around 200+ caps, started painting charts, discussing about Art Mela
activities, these all gave me a good for bonding between among us (AEYE class
students). For the 1st time in AEYE class & 2nd time
in my APU life without any facilitator all students gathered together and
working for something. This shows respect towards course and fellow students. I
like and respect this type of conditions.
On 13th October Friday when we
all once again gather for buying the gadgets, utilizing the resources,
explaining and knowing about school setting situations for Art Mela, makes me
feel happier about pre-planning activities, this coordination and cooperation
between others make me feel more responsible towards Art Mela.
I need to maintain the relation like this
only with children, then they will participate and learn more things from
groups. When I maintain good relation with students through interesting activities,
even though faculty is there I think work will go very nice for this I need to
be work with no expectations (We need to assign some responsibilities then only
they can meet)
On 23rd & 24th
we tried to maintain this AEYE period for completing the all pre-art mela
activities. When we started painting the charts soon, the clean activity room
became chaos with so many water painting cups, colored paint brushes, useless
newspaper pieces, painted charts, clumsy gadgets in the box, paper cuttings,
etc. By seeing the room I felt unhappy, any way we cleaned on the top
generally, etc. I felt when we are using the gadgets we need to me more
conscious to keep surroundings more clean.

Interventions:
I also decorated the shamiyana with
chart papers with our activities name along with other classmates. Before the
Mela I visited all three places and saw the decorations there. Later I started
arranging for my dabbling activity with children.
I helped children in making dabbling art
on newspaper, 1st I demonstrated them and later directed them in
making dabbling art with crushed newspaper on plain newspaper. I previously
made some crushed newspaper for this activity. Later I changed my strategy to
make that crush papers.
I
used to start this activity initially with some icebreaking activities, later I
make to make the papers crush.
I also observed my co-art and craft member
activities which is going around me.
Some photos of our interventions in
Art Mela with children:
Reflection:
All students (including) helped each other
in arranging gadgets (Paints, Brushes, Papers {White, Color, Chart, Newspaper,
etc.}, pebbles, leafs, sketches, salt, water, pencils, glue) near stalls,
decorating stalls with color papers, charts etc. It very good to watch this.
When I started my dabbling activity with
four children I started happily, when the number of students increasing, the
dabbling activity became mechanical than organic activity. When the children
are less I am able to spend time on each Individual child, when numbers are
increasing I feel it just became a normal activity than art activity. I started
with some enthusiasm not more with more enthusiasm (I didn’t like my activity
because art means creative activity with coordination, for children there is no
need to include aesthetics), while doing this activities I felt that, there is
not that much mental representation, coordination in this activity. That’s why
I started this dabbling activity with some ice breaking activities then I feel
satisfactory with my performance.
I feel we need to change according to the
context while teaching, there is no need to follow same pattern same time, this
gave me happiness including children also.
After Lunch when I attended drama session,
I was happy with the performance of our students and also the teachers, I saw
the smile on each one there, I feel all are happy there while watching drama
and also by doing theatre and ice-breaking activities, Later some teachers came
to “Art and Craft Mela” sub group, I intentionally didn’t add my dabbling
activity there because I felt that there is not that much representation,
coordination is there in that activity.
While Indira doing salt painting activity,
Gagan & Vikas Puppetry activity, Ranjeet & Vishnu’s origami activity, Rencita’s
raw vegetables activities I am completely facilitated by those activities while
doing with children especially with teachers. I also fascinated to learn this,
by seeing that I felt somewhat I learnt those activities because of some
exposure.
Art Mela Idea is very nice idea and
experience, because through this child & also teachers will get exposure to
different forms of arts that can help in learning the art.
Feedback
Feedback
Naga,
Wonderfully written record of practicum visits. I
particularly want to comment on your self-reflections on what you
experienced.
Your dislike of selecting, good drawings but not on
theme. Perhaps for older children there can be choice from different set of
themes
Changing strategies or modifying the classroom
transaction according to the situation as you even mention the Art Mela.
I liked the fact that you felt rewarded when students
worked on their own, its rare but it happened.
23/25 for the practical record
