Question:-
Read the discussion on “Aims of Education” in Cornel Hamm’s & Winch essays. In the former you find R.S. Peters claiming that the who argue that education should have aims misunderstand the meaning of aims and its place in the context of education. What are the reasons for this claim? In contrast to this, Winch argues for the need to articulate aims however difficult it might be. Why? Explain at least 3 reasons for winch claim. You are also encouraged to develop your own reasons with adequate justifications.
Introduction:-
Definitions & Meanings: - (In my opinion)
Aims: - Aim is mental condition and which have some vision about future
Education:- Education is a type of training (Practice) which is
making us to prepare for our life to accept all things that are success &
failure, Profit & loss, Happiness & Sadness in a positive manner
(Treating them all equally). This gets through cognitive welfare.
“Education is a neutral part & it is not in
isolation. Scope & extent of knowledge is in the subjects only but not in
Education”
About Authors:-
R.S. Peters:- Richard Stanley Peters was an English Philosopher,
& his work areas are Philosophy of Education, Political theory &
Psychology
Christopher Winch: - He is a professor in Philosophy of Education in
London Kings College
Cornel Hamm: - He is the author of Philosophical issues in Education
Aims of Education: -
R.S. Peters is defining education as an Achievement in
life (But all achievements are not Education). Winch is saying that Education
is preparing us for life in a better manner.
Aims are based on Values & Values are based on
desires, Aims express our values & mutually values express our aims. The
Aim is not a simple to define & describe. Educational Aims are achievement
in both Intrinsic & Extrinsic.
Cornel Hamm is saying that aims (Uses) of education
are in 3 ways that are E1Sociological, E2 Institutional, & E3 General
Enlightenment. Generally so many see education by keeping this uses as a aims,
one to socialize (How to Behave in Society) in the society, Most of the people
thinking that only Institutions only giving education if they ask how much you
educated means how many years you was trained in the Institution & General
enlightenment as mental state & also transformation of our self by reviewing
our self.
R.S. Peters is saying that Value, Knowledge (Breath
& Depth) & Procedure as criteria for Education, If we full fill these
three Value, Knowledge (Breath & Depth) & Procedure criteria’s it will
reform you in a better way. In Value R.S. Peters is Defining education as an
Achievement, Education is not sticking to any specific activity. In Knowledge
criteria he is saying Breath (How much range of things we know) & in Depth
(How much Detaille you know about range of things by questioning why?). In Procedural
criteria it is kind of different activities techniques which will takes us to
end (Achievement through activities).
Christopher Winch is saying that we are making aims
for Liberal, vocational & Civic Educations. Liberal education is talking
about culture, Vocational education is telling about Economic and Charitable
activities & Civic education is saying about politics.

My Interpretation on “Misunderstandings of Aim”:
R.S. Peters told that Aims are based on values &
He defined value as “Which makes our life worthwhile is real value & it is
based for aim, that done through Intrinsic Education, not by extrinsic
education”
R.S. Peters is saying that Aim has been misunderstood
by so many people, R.S. Peters claimed (Defined) that Education as an
Achievement. In his reading achievement is in the sense of “Intrinsic”- Form of
thing in itself, which get through 6th sense (Thinking) it doesn’t
think about physical phenomena. Aim has been misunderstood by people by keeping
Aims as Extrinsic phenomena which is related to physical outcome that is
related to expectations
This achievement of education is intrinsically very
valuable, Education is not an instrument or tool, and the achievement will come
through comparison judgment in 3 ways that are Value, knowledge &
Procedure. Value is come through desire in you.
My Reasons:-
Intrinsic achievement is mental satisfaction, through
this we can achieve control or sacrifice on our emotions, feelings, attitudes
& etc. it slightly related to reverence.
Aim has been misunderstood by extrinsic phenomena
& physical outcome which may never full fill (Satisfy) us. If we get 10,000
salary, we are not satisfied we want to get more salary by seeing others we may
feel jealous. If we are more salary than others we may feel proud and starts
insulting them, due to all this extrinsic achievement our mind, thoughts will
never calm down, it go out of peace, so this may not real achievement,
Extrinsic achievement is very easy to get, its visible to so many people by their
status and things etc.
But Intrinsic achievement will keep you in peace &
calm, through that you feel very happy with whatever you have, so that you
don’t have any bad thoughts, so no bad (Harmful) actions, so intrinsic
achievement is may be the real aim of education which we gets through practice
& The intrinsic aim (Achievement) in invisible & very difficult to get
it. Consciously or unconsciously everybody comes to this intrinsic aim stage
for some time.
These achievements may not be permanent every time
Claims on Aims of
Education by Christopher Winch: -
Winch claimed (Defined) Education as preparation for
life. And it is the Aim of Education according to him. He claimed that it is
very difficult to articulate aims, even though it is difficult we need to
articulate aims. (I also don’t how to make clear-aims). Winch they are
different aspects of life they closely connected to what they feel valuable. He
made 3 aspects of education (Aims of Education) that Liberal, vocational &
Civic Education. Liberal education concerns about traditional
Liberal Education is preparing us to follow some one’s
life as a tradition; it may be also called as Cultural education.
Justification on this is: - Cultural education is good
(Keeping Liberal education as a Aim) blindly following this don’t make sense,
we have to make some changes in that. This may be an intrinsic aim
My Claims for Aims of
Education:-
In my opinion Aims are necessary for our life to make
for life in a beautiful & good manner. I think Aim less life is like
driving bike without knowing destination in more traffic city. The aim will
restrict us in keeping in one way in our busy life.
Loves, Motivation & Autonomous are the 3 claims by
me.
All these claims connected by Responsibility, to reach
the aim. Without responsibility this may become useless
Love will surely help you in reaching your aim, but it
takes time to reach the goal, & it may be permanent, because those who love
you, sub-consciously or unconsciously sensitize you to reach their expectation,
without troubling you a lot.
How means through Example
One real story of a man becoming collector. When he
was a child, in their village marriage happened to their relatives, their
village is in island of a river, the bribe group coming to their village
through boat, unfortunately the boat immersed into the river because of
cyclone, then the boy father said that you become a collector you can construct
a bridge on this river, with this experience he worked hard & became
collector. Here through love towards family may help in succeeding aims. It is
an Extrinsic & Civic Aim
Motivation:-
Motivation also helps in reaching your aim, but it is
like charging a mobile, (According), we will get motivation through counseling,
love, Knowledge, Wisdom interest on work & etc. To reach the motivation
gives you a hope about aim, If I say that I can’t do that work, some will
motivates me to do that work by showing the some profits of that work.
For example I didn’t read the CDL reading, I have to
write an assignment today itself, then someone will motivates me that In CDL
you have how child behaves in old age, that already you saw so many times, with
that motivation I can complete aim in finishing assignment.
Autonomous:-
Autonomous (Uniqueness) will help you in reaching our
aims successfully, It giving freedom & right to take your decision. With
responsible feeling you can achieve aim, without that we can’t reach to your
aim. It calm down your brain, helps to reach the aim without any pressure in
autonomous we have right to take any decision, with responsibility only we can
take decisions, if we don’t have that responsibility you can’t take any
decision and become lazy.
My Parents gave me to take autonomous decision, they
are valuing my decisions. If they are giving only freedom only means I may
become a idiot. But they respected my decisions & gave suggestions which
will lead me to reach my aim.
These all claims are inter connected & Extrinsic
in nature which relate to physical outcome, without feeling aim as responsibility
(In a Positive mood)
